Think housing availability generally, older person housing availability, workforce housing availability, access to health services, and poverty. A brief overview of federal actions Some impacts of DOGE actions have already been felt. For example, VCU and UVA both obeyed Executive Order 14168 in advance by cancelling gender-affirming care to teens. UVA resumed care last week following a court order. As U.Va. board to meet over gender-affirming care dispute explains, The matter has become a partisan issue ignited by President Donald Trump’s Jan. 28 executive order banning all gender-affirming medical treatment for patients under 19, even in Virginia, where the Virginia Human Rights Act in the state code explicitly protects people from discrimination related to their gender identity. Despite the state law, Youngkin and Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, both Republicans, have voiced support for the executive order’s limitati...

Legislation aims to reduce hunger among college students

Will Virginia fund college food pantries or leave students struggling? considers an important question. And for those not familiar with the struggles of students attending community college, this Virginia Merc piece provides an insight into one of many challenges facing today’s students: Access to food. Rappahannock Community College has two pantries, one on the Glenns campus and one in Warsaw. Calleds “Squall’s Stall,” the pantries offer “Fresh, frozen, non-perishable and personal hygiene items are available to RCC students, faculty, and employees. Grab-and-go items are available too.” Given that we know SNAP usage in three NNK counties is higher than the state average, it's not a stretch to believe that food insecurity is common among community college students. In House actions may negatively impact NNK residents on SNAP we wrote, According to American Community Survey 5-Year data (2017-2021), three of the four counties on the Northern Neck―Lancaster (9.4%), Richmond (...

Wittman's mobile office hours. Take advantage. Use your voice.

Congressman Rob Wittman has mobile office hours ! Who knew?! He does. My rec is to go and tell the MC and staff your priorities. Cooper Branch Library (20 Washington Ave, Colonial Beach): First Monday of every month, 9:00 - 11:00 am Lancaster Community Library (16 Town Centre Dr, Kilmarnock): Second Tuesday of each month, 10:00 am - Noon Essex Public Library (117 N Church Ln, Tappahannock): Second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, 10:00 am - Noon (I know Essex County is not on the NNK but Tappahannock is accessible) Old Circuit Court (5840 Richmond Rd, Warsaw): First and third Wednesdays of each month, 10:00 am - Noon My priorities are for Wittman to lead (generally; he's a follower and lap dog), govern, and specifically, to tell the president that he is overstepping and to stop. Most important, though, is for our MC to protect “the last, the least, and the lost.” Need a primer on this last bit? Read The Meanin...
