The Department of Conservation and Recreation reminds us that “anywhere it can rain, it can flood.” DCR contuinues, “The best way to protect the life you’ve built is to insure your home and business with flood insurance. Free promotion for fall festivals and Oktoberfest

It’s Oktoberfest and fall festival time and there are plenty of folks who will travel for an event. Sept. 6 is the deadline for Beehive Distribution Program app

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services ’ (VDACS) Beehive Distribution Program is encouraging the public to apply for the 2024 Beehive Distribution Program lottery. The program “provides equipment directly to eligible individuals for the construction of new beehives” and VDACS registers winners as registered beekeepers. September 6 is the deadline for applying.

Register for the Nov. 1-2 The Power of Place Symposium

The Power of Place Symposium takes place November 1-2 at The Lodge at Cat Point Creek Unit of the Rappahannock River National Wildlife Refuge. Space is limited. Variety rules the agenda (PDF). Sessions include a guided hike and paddle excursions on Cat Point Creek, a panel discussion on Indigenous landscapes, a panel discussion on Indigenous scholarship, and a session on advocacy and activism. Get your tickets now for the Sept. 7 Northumberland County Community Center Organization Crabfeast

Northumberland County Community Center Organization (NCCCO) and supporter NNK250 are throwing down crabs and other goodies at the NCCCO Crabfeast Saturday, September 7 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. The Department of Wildlife Resources is recruiting folks to become Conservation Police . On the site, you’ll find FAQs, deets about the position, the application link, and an email address to ask additional questions before proceeding.

Lively community meeting Aug. 21

The Facebook group A Lively Community is “a place for community members to share the happenings in our little village.” The group is interested in promoting happenings in Lively, discussing county and other public policy topics, and reviving past events. Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office staff and Mid-County Volunteer Rescue Squad invite Northumberland County residents, business owners, and others to the Wednesday, October 2 Coffee with a Cop at Mid-County (7990 Northumberland Hwy/Rte 360, Heathsville). Public encouraged to comment on proposed rule changes re: fishing and boating

The Department of Wildlife Resources is accepting comments on six proposed boating and fishing regulatory changes. The deadline is September 10 . The proposed changes: Fish: Fish Generally (4VAC 15-320; changes to creel and length limits for certain fish; see section 25) Fish: Trout Fishing (4VAC 15-330; amending chapter 330 sections 150 and 160) Fish: Aquatic Invertebrates, Amphibians, Reptiles, and Nongame Fish (4VAC 15-360; removing species of bullhead from ability to take; section 10) Watercraft: Motorboat Numbering (4VAC 15-380; chapter 80; amending sections 30 and 40) Watercraft: Safe and Reasonable Operation of Vessels (4VAC 15-390; amending sections 10, 85, and 140 of chapter 390) Watercraft: Navigation Lights and Shapes (4VAC 15-420; amending section 10 of chapter 420)
