Thought you might be interested Thursday: The Recycling Game Is Rigged Against You

As if the title of this Bloomberg article (metered) is not bad enough, the subtitle—Even if you put everything into the right blue bins, a lot of plastics will end up in landfills and the ocean. Consumers can't solve this problem.—is even more telling about the problem facing us now and far into the future. And then there's the intro graf: Americans were not set up for success in recycling plastics. Even before China stopped accepting plastic refuse from abroad, 91 percent of potentially recyclable plastic in the U.S. ended up in landfills – or worse, in the oceans. Europe does a little better, with only 70 percent getting tossed. Despite the one-two punch, keep reading. You'll learn how single-stream recycling has a ton of unintended consequences, how differences in municipal recycling programs confuses consumers, and how combination packaging prevents recycling.

"Although this study focused on treatment while in the emergency department, if we can successfully treat acute extremity pain with a non-opioid combination painkiller in there, then we might be able to send these patients home without an opioid prescription," said lead researcher Dr. Andrew Chang. He is a professor of emergency medicine at Albany Medical Center, in Albany, N.Y. . . . "If we can limit people's first exposure to opioids, that may have a long-term effect in reducing people's risk to becoming opioid-dependent," said Kyriacou, who wrote an editorial that accompanied the study. Thought you might be interested Thursday: Why Rich Kids Are So Good at the Marshmallow Test

Jessica McCrory Calarco 's Why Rich Kids Are So Good at the Marshmallow Test is a must-read if the last you read about the subject was the original paper Predicting adolescent cognitive and self-regulatory competencies from preschool delay of gratification: Identifying diagnostic conditions. As the title of Calarco's article suggests, there is new life for the study of delayed gratification. The long and the short of Calarco's update on this work is this: Ultimately, the new study finds limited support for the idea that being able to delay gratification leads to better outcomes. Instead, it suggests that the capacity to hold out for a second marshmallow is shaped in large part by a child’s social and economic background—and, in turn, that that background, not the ability to delay gratification, is what’s behind kids’ long-term success. Find the time to read this piece in the Atlantic. It's well-written and interesting, sharing gems such as this: There’s plenty of ...
