SNAP EBT changes are underway

Between September and December 2026, the Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS) will issue new Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The new cards are chip-enabled and thus more secure. The card balance will transfer to the new card.

DSS has published information for cardholders to make the transition easier. DSS has also published information for retailers; additional info is available from the Virginia Retail Federation, Industry Updates: SNAP EBT Modernization & Virginia ABC News | March 2026
