VDOT hearings on Norris Bridge project
VDOT is holding two Norris Bridge replacement project design public hearings in an open house style: Wednesday, October 21, 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Lancaster High School (100 Visionary Way, Irvington) and Thursday, October 22, 5:00 - 7:00 pm at St. Clare Walker Middle School (6814 General Puller Hwy, Locust Hill).
Those unable to attend these hearings are encouraged to submit comments using this online form.
The comment period to be included in the public record for this public hearing closes on November 2.
Project materials including the hearing brochure and design boards are online and downloadable.

Golf carts in Irvington
On September 18, the Town of Irvington shared the state’s golf cart policy: “Golf carts are allowed on streets in Irvington with a 25-mph speed limit (including King Carter Drive, Steamboat Road, and Chesapeake Drive). Golf carts are not allowed on Irvington Road (State Rt 200) due to heavier traffic per the Virginia Department of Transportation’s guidelines.”

County hiring paid EMTs and paramedics
The Department of Emergency Services is hiring full-time part-time EMTs and paramedics to join the county’s paid crew.

County encourages participation in volunteer emergency services organizations
Northumberland County, like rural counties throughout the state and acrsos the country, relies on volunteers to provide medical, rescue, and fire assistance. The Department of Emergency Services is encouraging the public to volunteer for one or more of the opportunities:
Northumberland County Department of Emergency Services works closely with a number of volunteer public safety organizations that play a vital role in protecting our community. These dedicated fire, rescue, and maritime response agencies rely on volunteers to keep their missions strong, and each one is actively seeking new members.

Northumberland County achieves StormReady status
On September 10, the Northumberland County Department of Emergency Services announced the county has achieved StormReady Community designation status by the National Weather Service.
Chris Bailey, department director, wrote on FB:
This designation recognizes the County’s ongoing efforts to enhance severe weather preparedness, improve emergency communications, and strengthen our ability to protect residents before, during, and after hazardous weather events.
Being StormReady means we are better prepared to receive weather warnings, coordinate emergency response efforts, and keep our community informed when it matters most.
We thank everyone who played a role in achieving this important milestone, and are appreciative for our partnership with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and US National Weather Service Wakefield VA.
Working together, we continue to make Northumberland County a safer place to live, work, and visit.
The designation affirms that jurisdictions have in place emergency operations plans, partnerships and collaborative relationships with the community, and community preparedness training and expertise. Northumberland County will have to renew its designation by demonstrating the ability to meet NOAA’s standards.
