Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Student Poetry Contest
Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, long-time community college educator, has launched the statewide poetry contest in coordination with Virginia Humanities. According to the announcement,
The competition invites elementary, middle, and high school students from across the Commonwealth to showcase their creativity, celebrate Virginia’s rich identity, and share their unique voices through poetry. The competition underscores the power of language to bring communities together while honoring the Commonwealth’s natural beauty, diverse people, and enduring heritage.
The submission deadline is November 16.
Young people are being asked to respond to prompts.

Photo contests
The Coastal Leadership Conference is a regional event for college and university students, environmental professionals, and partners and features research, collaboration, and networking. An essential component of the conference is the photo contest. Submissions are due September 7 and work by pros and amateurs is accepted.
The Rapp Record and Southside Sentinel are running a photo contest on agriculture on the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. The submission deadline is Friday, September 4. They write,
For 250 years, farmers have been a vital part of the nation and an important part of the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, where fields and farms have often been worked by generations of the same family. As a way to celebrate 250 years of U.S. agriculture, specifically its history in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, the Rappahannock Record and Southside Sentinel are asking for reader-submitted photographs which may appear in the upcoming Bay Heritage supplement.
A field of soybeans blowing in the breeze at sunrise, a combine thrashing corn at sunset, an old tractor sitting alone in a field or cattle grazing in a pasture—any and all agriculture related photos are welcome, old or new, color or black and white.
Submit photos with a brief description, including names of people pictured if applicable, by email to editor@rapprecord.com or editor@ssentinel.com. Photos also may be delivered to the Rappahannock Record, 27 North Main Street, Kilmarnock or Southside Sentinel, 276 Virginia Street, Urbanna; or sent to the Record, PO Box 400, Kilmarnock, VA, 22482, or the Sentinel, PO Box 549, Urbanna, VA, 23175.
