Public hearings
Lancaster County government is having two public hearings Thursday, August 27.
The first is the Planning Commission hearing at 6:00 pm about a zoning district classification change from agricultural to commercial for a ~1.9 acre parcel in White Stone. Read the planning agenda including application. The public is encouraged to participate.
The second is the joint BOS/Planning Commission hearing at 7:00 pm on one, the proposal to create a Legacy Residential District (LR-2) and to consider placing a lot of parcels into this Legacy Residential District (LR-2) and two, to amend the Transient Occupancy Tax. The public is encouraged to participate.
Parks and public access
ICYMI, the county’s Parks and Public Access page lists public assets―including Carter Cove County Park, Taylor Creek Park, and Windmill Point―and provides additional information such as allowed and disallowed activities, restrictions, and any relevant updates.

And earlier this month, Sen. Mark Warren and TriWay Trail leadership announced the award of $2.1 million to allow the multi-jurisdiction project to complete the 10-mile trail. The trail will connect Kilmarnock, Irvington, and White Stone and will allow multiple modes of transportation, like biking and walking.
TriWay Trail secured a VDOT Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant for the project. With the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding, VDOT was able to support community-based, non-motorized transportation projects including pedestrian and bicycle facilities, safe routes to school, and enhancements to the cultural, historical, and environmental aspects of transportation infrastructure.
VDOT activities
Between Monday, August 24 and Thursday, August 27, 7:00 pm to 6:00 am, there may be delays on the Robert O. Norris, Jr., Bridge as work on the bridge requires lane closures. VDOT writes on Facebook that all lanes will reopen by 6:00 am Friday, August 28.

Northumberland County
Pillars of Community Growth Survey
The Board of Supervisors has launched a survey to gather information from the public about the future economy and more specifically jobs and job growth.
The survey is based on “pillars of community growth” and “building blocks.” Both are explained in the 2026 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN (PDF). Each of the pillars―quality of life, workforce, infrastructure, community support―are made up of building blocks, things like education and rule of law.
You will be asked to rate how well the county is doing on each of the 25 building blocks.
Survey responses are anonymous and results will be reported in the aggregate. The supes will be scheduling community discussions about the future.

New RCPS superintendent
According to the News on the Neck story Jason Strong Named Superintendent,
Richmond County Public Schools named Jason Strong as its next superintendent.
The School Board voted to appoint Strong, who previously served as assistant superintendent, to lead the division. Strong is no stranger to Richmond County, having begun his career with the school system more than 20 years ago and since served in a variety of leadership roles.
There is no information about the new superintendent on the RCPS website. Strong is mentioned in regard to his prior position as Assistant Superintendent.
Westmoreland County
According to a post in the Colonial Yacht Club FB group earlier today, there is a permanent/fixed no wake marker in Monroe Bay/Creek. The author cautions after-dark boaters to pay extra attention.
