Let's talk environment: Catch the King, invasive species, learning opps, and more

Wetlands Watch is hosting Lunch & Learn: Catch the King & Measure the Muck 101 Friday, August 28 at Noon. The event will

provide background on this Guinness World Record-Holding community science program and how you can get involved this year. We will also hear from special guests Dr. Derek Loftis (Virginia Institute of Marine Science) about how data is used, and Dr. Margie Mulholland (Old Dominion University's Measure the Muck) about flood water quality and more ways to get involved.

Participation on the Northern Neck is spotty. Session speakers will explain why sea level rise matters (flooding, destruction of housing, the environment, and infrastructure) and how regular ol’ people can play a role in addressing sea level rise. Tune in to learn more about Catch the King and how you and your community can help your community adapt to climate change and stay safe from flooding.

Northern Neck Green, nnkgreen.org “is a regional website designed as the go-to place for all topics environmental, relevant to the Northern Neck of Virginia. It is maintained with the active participation and contribution from many of the region’s organizations that are dedicated to making the most out of our air, land, and water—by making them last.”

Organizations are encouraged to contribute content to the website to help better inform community members of all kinds. Appropriate content is wide ranging; it includes water testing and HHW events along with news, contests (like the Catch the King student art contest), ecotourism, policy changes and related advocacy opportunities, fundraising events, and opportunities to collaborate.

NOAA Storm Events Database moves

The Storm Events Database has a new home: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/storm-events-database.

With the move comes three new capabilities: “The ability to search with a map, a map view of all events in an episode, and the ability to generate a PDF report from search results, in a similar format to the Storm Data publication.”

Aquatic invasive species pose an ongoing threat to native species, the economy, recreation, and human health and safely. Many aquatic invasive species - including plants, fish, and mussels - can be accidentally transported when people go fishing and boating. By following a few simple steps every time you leave the water, you can help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species and protect the environment.

The nonprofit Wildlife Forever whose initiative Clean. Drain. Dry. National Campaign on Invasive Species “educates and empowers recreational users to do their part in stopping the spread of AIS.” And for good reason:

At an estimated cost of $137,000,000,000 annually, Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) harm humans, the environment, and the economy. America’s 13 million boaters and more than 42 million hunters share responsibility to stop the spread of invasive species.

A Systematic Review of Literature on Renters and Climate and Weather Hazards, August 26, 1:00 - 2:00 pm.

Abstract: While renters are about 36% of the U.S. population (DeSilver 2021), the literature on their experiences with different climate and weather hazards is underdeveloped. Furthermore, previous systematic reviews of housing tenure and hazards have included dated studies and have not had an exclusive focus on the U.S. (Lee and Van Zandt 2019; Gonzalez and Fisher2026); these have also had a single hazard focus (Gonzalez and Fisher 2026). Up to date insights on how renters are experiencing climate and weather hazards across U.S. communities are needed to enhance multi-scalar resilience efforts. This systematic review focused on U.S. studies (n=29) conducted after 2010 on renters and climate and weather hazards in the U.S.; these included multiple hazards, which aligned with the Science Priorities of the NOAA Office of Atmospheric Research. Additionally, Gemini.AI was used to develop database search strings.
