VDOT project: Intersection of Carlson and Pinckardsville Rds
VDOT has plans to improve road safety by modifying the roadway at the intersection of Rt. 615 (Carlson Road) at the intersection with Rt. 605 (Pinckardsville Road) in Lancaster County near the Northumberland County line. The public is encouraged to comment on the proposal at a the Wednesday, August 26, 5:00 - 7:00 pm meeting at Lancaster Elementary School (191 School St, Kilmarnock). Comments on the project will be accepted at the public hearing and afterward through Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Hazardous Household Waste Collection, Sat., Sept. 12
The Northern Neck Soil and Water Conservation District and partners have announced Saturday, September 12, 8:00 am to Noon for the Lancaster County Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics collection event. More information is available from NNSWCD (804-313-9102, x105) and VCE-Lancaster (804-462-5780).
The event takes place at the Lancaster County Courthouse (8265 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster, parking lot).
The event is for Lancaster County residents and property owners.
Accepted items: Spent fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, anti-freeze, rechargeable batteries, cleaners, oil-based paint/stain, old/contaminated fuels/petroleum products, household chemicals (cleaners), computers and laptops, mainframes, peripherals, monitors, flat screens, telephones, cell phones, telephone systems, fax machines, copiers, printers, televisions, electronic circuit boards and components, stereo equipment, games, etc.
Items not accepted: Radioactive items, smoke detectors, medical waste, ammo/explosives.
Carter Cove County Park
Lancaster County has broken ground on Carter Cove County Park and expects an opening in the spring of 2027. According to the county, features will include a “boat ramp, fishing pier, ADA canoe/kayak launch, oyster heritage learning center, comfort station, walking trails, ample car and trailer parking, and ADA accessibility.”
The park is on the Carters Cove branch of Carters Creek, under 10 miles from the Chesapeake Bay.
Water Storage Tank Maintenance Program in Kilmarnock
The Town of Kilmarnock shared on FB info about the maintenance to take place on water storage towers:
The Town of Kilmarnock is beginning a multi-year Water Storage Tank Maintenance Program to help protect and extend the service of an essential part of our community’s infrastructure.
Following a professional assessment of our water storage tanks completed in 2025, the Town is moving forward with recommended preventative maintenance and rehabilitation of all three of our water towers.
Together, the East Church Street, Hospital, and Radio water towers provide approximately 560,000 gallons of water storage and are an important part of the system serving approximately 1,500 customers.
This work is about being proactive. Regular maintenance and rehabilitation help extend the useful life of our water storage tanks, protect the Town’s investment, and reduce the potential for more significant and costly repairs in the future.
The project is also part of a larger, long-term effort to ensure the continued reliability of our water system for years to come.
The Town has contracted with USG Water Solutions, which specializes in the inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation, and preservation of municipal water infrastructure, to complete the work.
📍 First up: East Church Street Water Tower
Work will begin at the East Church Street tower before moving to the Hospital Tower and then the Radio Tower.
Important: This project involves our water storage tanks, not our wells. The wells will continue pumping water into the system, and only one storage tank will be taken out of service at a time. No disruption to normal water service is anticipated.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll share more about the project, how our water system works, what residents can expect during construction, and the improvements being made to each tower.

Westmoreland County
New parks and rec department
The county is having a Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Department town hall and the public is encouraged to attend. The event is being held Wednesday, August 19 at 6:00 pm at the George D. English Building (111 Polk St, Montross, in the Board Room). This event follows up on the news of the re-establishment of the parks and rec department, one that will offer expanded and engaging recreational opportunities.
The new department comes after the cancellation of the county’s contract with the Westmoreland YMCA and the exit of the Boys and Girls Club from Westmoreland County.

We want to share an important update regarding YMCA services in Westmoreland County.
Westmoreland County has elected not to renew its agreement with the YMCA and will be creating its own Parks and Recreation Department. As a result, YMCA-operated programs and services at the AT Johnson Building will conclude on September 30, 2026.
After-school child care will continue at Washington District Elementary School. The YMCA is committed to looking into future opportunities to serve Westmoreland County residents.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have served Westmoreland County residents and will work closely with County leadership to support an orderly transition.

Candidates for Colonial Beach Town Council
On July 29, Colonial Beach Brewing (FB) held an event to introduce the four candidates ― Becky Stuart, Bobby Duke, Jeff Eisensmith, and Will Nuckols ― for Town Council. Community radio station WWER was there and recorded their introductory remarks.

The Sheriff's Office will accept prescription and over-the-counter drugs at the HHW event. Accepted items include tablets and capsules, inhalers, creams and ointments, nasal sprays, and pet medicines. Items not accepted are needles/sharps, liquids, and bloody or other infectious waste (bio-hazards). Learn more.
