As hurricane season progresses, experts have continued to forecast a lower-than-usual hurricane season and adjust their predictions downward. TSR, for example, has “lowered its forecast from early July due to conditions in the sub-tropical Atlantic looking less favourable than as appeared to be a month ago.” (August Forecast Update for North Atlantic Hurricane Activity in 2026, PDF). CSU, University of Arizona, and 268Weather cite El Niño has a major force impacting hurricane formation. NOAA explains, “El Nino increases wind shear, which tends to prevent tropical storms from forming or from getting stronger once formed.”
