Social listening on Reddit
ICYMI with Lia Haberman recently featured Reddit: Reddit Is the New Reddit. It is directed at large businesses/corporations but that doesn’t mean there are no nuggets for small businesses, community organizations, individuals. Starting with people: “In an ironic twist, even as brands obsess over their reputation and visibility on the platform, Reddit is focusing on a on a different signal: human beings.”
- “But if you look at the data, Reddit seems to be the new — or maybe the same old — Reddit, consistently ranking as one of the internet’s most trusted sources.”
- On entering conversations, Chief Marketing Officer Jim Squires said, “But I advise brands to be citizens of these communities, not billboards, because people will sniff it out and it will have a counter effect.”
- “A sous chef promised to chop chives on Reddit everyday until he perfected his technique. Philadelphia cream cheese created an ad around the trend and later gifted the chef a set of knives.”
What might this look like in r/NorthernNeck/, for example? Someone recently asked for recommendations for rehersal dinner venues. A restaurant owner in, say, Montross, could make recommendations and then add “The next time you’re in Montross, stop by ABC Restaurant to say hi. I’m the owner. I’d love to hear how the rehersal dinner turned out.”
The Northern Neck provides a ton of opportunities for interesting content. Think oysters, blue crabs, agriculture, fishing. . . Those immersed in those worlds may not think about their experience, what they know, the ins and outs of their daily lives. But framed correctly, content can be a total winner. Look at these two examples, both featuring Andy Sitison: Andy’s paddles shared on FB and the extraordinary ghost pot removal project documentation including ghost pot removal short and the NAPS - Ghost Pot Removal and Loss Prevention Program - Video Journaling play list.
