This weekend is big for outdoors activities―namely Free Fishing Days and National Trails Day―and the Northern Neck has more than its fair share of opportunities. If you are new to the area or looking for something new and different to do outside, start with Northern Neck Tourism. You will find trails (yay!), wineries, historic sites, deets about the Northern Neck Artisan Trail and Thriftiquing in the Northern Neck, and more.
If you are a outdoors business or one that cheers on that sector, what are the ways you are promoting free fishing and public lands day activities? Are, you, for example, hold a free fishing days event? Are you offering a free ice cream for visiting several parks or trails? No matter what you are doing, please consider actively promoting your event or support on social.

Free Fishing Days—Try it, You’ll Be Hooked! are June 5-7
The Department of Wildlife Resources tells us “No fishing license of any kind will be required for recreational rod and reel fishing during free fishing days. . . All fishing regulations including size, season, catch limits, and gear restrictions will remain in effect. DWR fee fishing areas still require a fee for Free Fishing Days weekend.”
Last year, a number of NNK businesses held Free Fishing Days activities. Such events are fun and can introduce young and old to the popular outdoor activity. If your business is doing something one or more of the days, be sure to share deets about the event(s) using the links shared above.
National Trails Day is Saturday, June 6
This annual outdoors event is this weekend and there are plenty of terra firma and water trails to get people outside. The question is this: “How is your nonprofit, community-based, or business going to engage with people to celebrate the day?”
The trails are the easy part. Harder is to quickly determine what you are going to do about Free Fishing Days and National Trails Day. Will you offer box lunches? A free ice cream with selfies of you and several outdoors locations?
Here’s a list of NNK trails to get you started.
