Oh, the possibility of using real maps to create fantasy maps

Inkarnate is a website which creates fantasy maps. But thinking about the Northern Neck, there are so many reality-based uses. . . from mapping history, tourism assets, and more! Imagine the fun you could have creating a map based on a real location (yes, it is possible) for an event, camp, tour.


Find library resources across the globe


WorldCat (R) is the mother of all library search tools, self-described as “the world’s largest library catalog, helping you find library materials online.” You can find books to borrow and the site also shares info about where to purchase materials.

The native plants book selection is most appropriate for where we are in the world today re: awareness and interest.


Coastal Inundation Zone economies seminar

NOAA’s Visualizing the Economies within Coastal Inundation Zones seminar takes place July 10, 3:00 - 4:00 pm and the public is encouraged to participate.

NOAA summarizes:

In early 2025, the NOAA Office for Coastal Management released the Employment in Coastal Inundation Zones (ECIZ) Visualization Tool showing data on businesses in coastal hazard areas. The tool includes coastal hazard footprints for FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA), hurricane storm surge, sea level rise, and tsunamis. It accompanies the ECIZ data that includes the number of businesses and employment in inundation zones by county and state. This information can be used by states, counties, floodplain managers, emergency managers and coastal managers to identify industries most at risk and the potential economic impact from interrupted economic activity as a result of coastal hazards.

Clicking on a county yields information in two places. Above the map, where clicking on Westmoreland County results in text― “Westmoreland County contains areas mapped for the following inundation zone(s): FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas, hurricane storm surge, and sea level rise. In 2021 there were 432 establishments, 3,280 jobs, and a labor force of 9,572 in Westmoreland County.”―and a pop-up with marine-related employment data and a link to learn more about the jurisdiction’s marine economy.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
