Chesapeake Bay Program seeks comments; deadline Aug. 30

Facebook post from Virginia Department of Environmental Quality about the Chesapeake Bay Program Partnership’s Beyond 2025 Steering Committee

Now is the time to dig into the Beyond 2025 draft report A Critical Path Forward For The Chesapeake Bay Program Partnership Beyond 2025 (PDF) so you can submit feedback by the August 30 deadline. Submit feedback via email. Before commenting, review Beyond 2025 Public Comment FAQ.

Fair warning: The two recommendations for the Chesapeake Executive Council, shown below, are pretty wonky and inside baseball. And essential.

  • Executive Council Recommendation #1: The Beyond 2025 Steering Committee recommends that the Chesapeake Executive Council affirm its continued commitment to meet the goals of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement and direct the Principals’ Staff Committee to propose specific amendments necessary to effectively implement the Watershed Agreement.
  • The Beyond 2025 Steering Committee recommends strengthening the Chesapeake Bay Program by identifying ways to simplify and streamline the partnership’s structure and processes, including potential changes to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Governance and Management Framework [PDF] to ensure that partner commitments can be met.

The draft also includes recommendations for the Chesapeake Bay Program. Categories are science, restoration and conservation, and partnership. The details in each section are incredibly important. For example, the partnership category contains the rec “Enhance Communications and Transparency to Foster Long-term Success.” Improved individual and collective outcomes would result from broader and deeper stewardship and more and better engagement with marginalized communities.

Writes DEQ:

The Chesapeake Bay Program Partnership’s Beyond 2025 Steering Committee wants to hear from YOU about the future of the Chesapeake Bay Program!

Over the past year, the Chesapeake Bay Program Partnership’s Beyond 2025 Steering Committee has worked to draft recommendations for the future of the Bay. These recommendations highlight proposed next steps for meeting the goals identified in the 2014 Watershed Agreement and beyond. The current watershed agreement and Virginia’s Watershed Implementation Plans guide our work through 2025, but the direction of the Partnership is uncertain beyond that point; these draft recommendations include a recommendation that the Partnership reaffirm its commitment to meet the goals of the current Agreement, as well as seek expertise to review and revise the Program’s governance structure.

That’s where you come in! There is an opportunity to provide feedback on the draft recommendations. The public feedback period runs from July 1 to August 30. All comments received will be reviewed, however you may not receive a direct response or follow-up to your submitted statement.
