Can Northumberland County deliver 918 pounds of HHW and e-waste April 20?

Northumberland County residents have the opportunity to blow past the 1 million pounds of household hazardous waste disposed of properly at the county's HHW and E-waste collection event Saturday, April 20 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. The event takes place at the middle school parking lot on Route 360/Northumberland Highway.

The 2024 collection season started March 23 in Lancaster County. NNSWCD - HHW event numbers, which contains data from the Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District, shows Lancaster County residents dropped off a total of 18,757 pounds of hazardous waste―13,125 in HHW and 5,632 in e-waste. That has put Northumberland County in the position to hit 1 million pounds at their first collection event of the year.

Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District recently sent an announcement about the milestone:

The Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District (NNSWCD) and our local Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) offices serving Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland Counties are pleased to share the exciting news of an upcoming significant milestone related to our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection efforts on the Northern Neck. Based on historical data, dating back to the 2005 inception of HHW collections on the Northern Neck, our region is 918 pounds shy of reaching the 1 MILLION POUNDS COLLECTED MILESTONE!

We believe this goal will be achieved within the first few hours of the upcoming Northumberland HHW collection event scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2024. Although the event will physically occur in Northumberland County, we want to recognize that this achievement is only possible due to the collaborative efforts of ALL the Northern Neck localities, partners, and our citizens.

It is a monumental accomplishment for our rural area to have collected and properly disposed of 500 TONS of potential pollutants that would have otherwise reached our local waterways; one that is certainly worthy of celebrating and commemorating. As such, we would like to capture the occasion with a special photo op on Saturday, April 20th at 10AM in Heathsville, VA to include a commemorative banner and representatives from each County, VCE, NNSWCD, and MXI.

The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%). Read the full press release, “Virginia’s Adaptive Management Addresses 2025 Blue Crab Population Fluctuations,” here: HAMPTON, VA - The 2025 Bay-wide Winter Dredge Survey results indicate the Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population has declined from an estimated 317 million crabs in 2024 to 238 million crabs. Virginia’s blue crab managers are not surprised by these findings, as c...
