Medicaid recertifications start in April

During the first three years of the pandemic―2020, 2021, and 2022―states were required to maintain coverage for people on Medicaid.

This continuous coverage requirement ends March 31. Starting April 1, 2023, the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) will begin conducting eligibility determinations and renewals for everyone on Medicaid and FAMIS. According to Medicaid Bulletin - End of Continuous Coverage and Update on Provider Flexibilities (PDF), “DMAS will have 12 months to initiate eligibility determinations and renewals for the more than 2.1 million Virginians who currently have Medicaid or FAMIS coverage.”

Incorrect contact information can result in a denial of benefits. Those on Medicaid/FAMIS are encouraged to update their contact information by calling Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282, by visiting commonhelp.virginia.gov, by contacting their local Department of Social Services office, or by contacting their Medicaid/FAMIS Managed Care Organization (MCO).
