April 22: HHW and electronic waste collection in Northumberland County

Northumberland County residents and property owners are encouraged to celebrate Earth Day by disposing of hazardous household and electronic waste Saturday, April 22, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm at the middle school bus parking lot (Route 360 in Heathsville). The event will be held rain or shine.

Items which can be dropped off:

  • Household chemicals such as oil-based paint, cleaners
  • Solvents, old or used petroleum products (including mower and boat gas), pool chemicals, pesticides, antifreeze
  • Used florescent and CFL bulbs
  • Computer equipment such as CPUs and laptops, monitors, printers
  • Telephones, cell phones, PDAs, fax machines
  • Stereo equipment and gaming systems
  • Vape pens/batteries

Items which cannot be dropped off:

  • Ammunition
  • Radioactive materials
  • Tires
  • Car batteries
  • Medical waste
  • Prescription drugs (see below)
  • Latex paint (latex paint does not present a danger to the environment and can be safely disposed of once the paint has dried in the can)

There is no charge to residents to dispose of these items but the collection is limited to Northumberland County residents and property owners only.

Historical data

Between 2009 and 2021, the public dropped off 199,347 pounds of hazardous household waste and 84,426 pounds of e-waste as part of Northumberland County’s drives. As the table below shows, there’s generally been an upward trajectory of HHW and electronic waste disposal. In 2020, disposal topped 32,000 pounds combined. One possible explanation for the dramatic increase between 2019 and 2020 is the 12-month gap between collections. Another is the pandemic had people staying at home, cleaning, purging, and renovating inside and out.
