News from Lancaster County

Volunteers are the bread and butter of government commissions here on the Northern Neck and across the country.

Some of Lancaster County's commissions and boards are under-volunteered and the county's Board of Supervisors has put the call out for interested and qualified people to fill the vacancies. Individuals are needed for the following:

  • Board of Zoning Appeals
  • Historic Resources Commission
  • Building Code Appeals Board
  • Economic Development Authority
  • Lancaster County Broadband Authority
  • Middle Peninsula/Northern Neck Community Services Board
  • Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Public Access and Working Waterfronts – new committee with no specific term

The Lancaster County Planning Commission is holding a public hearing Thursday, January 19 at 7:00 pm in person and virtually. The hearing sked is:

  1. Application for Change of Zoning District Classification from R-3, Residential, Medium General, to R-1, Residential General by Latosha Veney for a 1.000-acre parcel described as Tax Map #6-30B. This property is located in the 2100 block of Morattico Road (VSH 622).
  2. Proposed Zoning Ordinance Article 29 – Short-Term Rental Regulations. The intent of this ordinance is to provide sufficient regulation of short-term rentals to address the safety and enjoyment of transient visitors while protecting the neighborhoods in which short-term rentals are located.   3. Proposed Amendments to the following articles of the Zoning Ordinance:
    • Article 1 – Definitions. Amendment to include the definitions of Short-term rental; Short-term rental operator; Short-term rental, hosted; and Short-term rental, unhosted.
    • Article 4 – Agricultural General A-2 District. Amendment to add the permitted uses of 1) Short-term rental, hosted, and 2) Short-term rental, unhosted, with a special exception.
    • Article 5 – Residential General R-1 District. Amendment to add the permitted uses of 1) Short-term rental, hosted, and 2) Short-term rental, unhosted, with a special exception.
    • Article 6A – Residential Community R-4 District. Amendment to add the permitted uses of 1) Short-term rental, hosted, and 2) Short-term rental, unhosted, with a special exception.
    • Article 7 – Residential Medium General R-3 District. Amendment to delete “Tourist home” as a permitted use and add the permitted uses of 1) Short-term rental, hosted, and 2) Short-term rental, unhosted, with a special exception.
    • Article 18 – Waterfront Residential Overlay W-1 District. Amendment to add the permitted uses of 1) Short-term rental, hosted, and 2) Short-term rental, unhosted, with a special exception.
