The field is a high-growth one, outpacing the average of all other jobs combined at 11% versus 8% between 2020 and 2030, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics states. The BLS also reports the mean annual salary of $36,930 and hourly wage of $17.76. The Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services Volunteer Recruitment Directory and Career Finder currently shows 22 career (paid) openings for EMTs and paramedics including some with sign-on bonuses. You'll see not all the job openings are what we might think of as "traditional" EMT jobs. The BLS' Occupational Employment and Wages, May 2021 shows that EMTs work in a variety of settings and jobs. For example, hospitals, outpatient care centers, and scientific research and development services. All this to say there are options and good-paying ones, at that.
