The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is studying the Route 17 and Route 360 corridor in Tappahannock from Airport Road to LaGrange Industrial Drive. The study is being done because of the crash history, existing traffic concerns, and current and future traffic congestion.

The study will "examine safety issues for motorists, pedestrians, and other travel modes like bicyclists and bus riders" as well as traffic congestion. VDOT will make improvement recommendations for three areas in the corridor. VDOT planners and engineers will engage local stakeholders and planners in the effort to improve the "safety and traffic congestion challenges" in this part of Tappahannock. October 12, Northumberland County Wetlands Board

The Northumberland County Wetlands Board will hold a public hearing Tuesday, October 12 at 7:00 pm at the Northumberland County Sheriff's Office (195 Judicial Place, Heathsville) to consider the following applications for two wetland and/or coastal primary sand dune and beach permits

  1. Request by Elizabeth McAvoy (V/M.R.C. #21-1820) to install 83 linear feet of armor stone revetment channelward of an existing timber bulkhead and to re-construct two (2) timber groins to be covered with armor stone 60 feet from MHW along and from the shoreline of the Potomac River and 207 Cabell Lane.
  2. Request by Brion Thompson (V.M.R.C. #21-1903) to replace an existing failing timber groin with one armor stone groin 48 feet channelward of MHW from the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay and 105 Shoreline Drive.

October 14, Northumberland County Board of Supervisors

The supes meeting takes place Thursday, October 14 at 5:30 pm with public hearings to follow at 7:00 pm.

Public hearing topics:

  1. Add Zoning Definition for Livestock (PDF). Summary:
  2. The addition of a definition for livestock in the Northumberland County Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 148-3, as well as allowing administrative zoning approval of chickens and/or livestock within the Waterfront Residential, (R-2) Zoning District, provided they meet certain conditions. Applications that do not meet the conditions will go to the Board of Supervisors for consideration of a conditional use permit

  3. § 148-155. Solar energy facilities.[Added 6-14-2018] (PDF). Summary:

The revision of the Northumberland County Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 148-155, Solar Energy Facilities to add a two hundred foot setback along state maintained highways, add a requirement for an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), EMS/Fire/Sheriff training on site, operational notification to the county, installing a Knoxbox for access to the site, and to depict on the site plan areas of land disturbance as well as the Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area. The Planning Commission recommended adding that the 200 foot setback along state maintained roads may be reduced by the Board of Supervisors if the solar company institutes mitigation measures to prevent vehicles from entering the solar energy facility due to a traffic accident

  5. § 148-151 Boathouses. (PDF). Summary:

The revision of the Northumberland County Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 148-151, Boathouses, to increase the maximum size of boathouses allowed, to clarify the location at which side setbacks are measured, and a change in the requirement from a dwelling to a main building or structure connected to an approved septic drainfield or sewer before a boathouse can be constructed
