Richmond County

  • The Virginia Cooperative Extension Richmond County is asking the public for input about issues in Richmond County. The survey is completely anonymous and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Go to the survey. The survey closes December 1.

Richmond County

  • VDOT Hot Spots in the Fredericksburg District, November 25-December 1 (PDF):
    Essex County and Richmond County Work Zones
    Route 360 at the Downing Bridge
    (New)Monday – Friday, 10p.m. – 6a.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on the Downing Bridge over the Rappahannock River for bridge repairs. Automatic flagging devices will be placed near the center span of the bridge to control traffic. Expect overnight delays
  • The Town of Warsaw has two job openings: Wastewater Public Works Assistant and Public Works Operator. The positions are open until filled.

Westmoreland County

  • Take the Westmoreland County Community Survey from Virginia Cooperative Extension. Those who work and/or live in the county are encouraged to share the priorities you think Extension and Westmoreland County should devote attention. The deadline is December 1.
  • Comment on REEL NEWS, COLONIAL BEACH, VIRGINIA: "What would you like to see the new Colonial Beach Council Members change in 2019? _ Forget about Taxes gotta wait till 2020 when a New Mayor is Elected."

Cross-county

  • Northern Neck Beekeepers meets Monday, December 10 at 7:00 pm at St. Stephen's Church in Heathsville. Learn more.
  • In mid-October, the Potomac River Fisheries Commission "approved the opening of the oyster season for hand tongs starting at sunrise on Monday, October 15th, and running Mondays through Fridays through March 31, 2019 from sunrise to 3:00 pm." There are restrictions.
  • The Potomac River Fisheries Commission and Virginia Marine Resources Commission charted the Jones Shore Special Management Area on VMRC's mobile app to show the user's position relative to shellfish areas and other map features. According to PRFC,
    For PRFC jurisdictional waters, only the Jones Shore SMA is charted at this time, but depending on feedback from the public, we hope to chart other oyster bars and fixed fishing gear. The app is available for free from the Apple or Google app stores. Simply search for "VMRC Maps" on your smartphone to install, or click on the following link to learn more: https://webapps.mrc.virginia.gov/public/mrcmaps/. Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
