Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County Wetlands Board meets Thursday, November 8 at 9:30 am at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster; in the Board of Supervisors meeting room). The meeting agenda is:
    1. Russell and Susan Harper c/o Roger McKinley, Sr., 691 Mill Point Drive, Heathsville, VA 22473; requests permission to construct a 100’ linear foot riprap revetment, 195’ riprap sill, and two 40’ riprap groins along the shoreline of Dymer Creek.     2. Mark W. and Jean Claud c/o Bayshore Design, LLC., P.O. Box 339, Kinsale, VA 22488; requests permission to reconstruct 325’ of riprap revetment, construct one 60’ armor stone breakwater with a 35’ stone spur, construct one 55’ and a 35’ armor stone spur, construct one 260’ armor stone revetment and construct one 80’ armor stone breakwater with 60’ and 40 stone spurs along the shoreline of the Rappahannock River.     3. Graylend Horn c/o Joseph Scott, P.O. Box 315, Kilmarnock, VA 22482; requests permission to construct a 450’ linear foot off shore breakwater and two 45’ linear foot stone spurs with 7,036 cubic yards of beach nourishment along the shoreline of the Rappahannock River. Located off VSH 659 (Crab Point Road) on Dandelion Drive. Tax Map # 33-506. VMRC# 18-1656.
  • Upcoming Lancaster County School Board meetings are Tuesday, November 13 at 5:30 pm and Tuesday, December 11 at 6:30 pm.
  • Town of Kilmarnock Town Council November committee meetings are scheduled for Thursday, November 1 at Kilmarnock Town Hall (1 N Main St):
    • 8:30 am: Police/Public Safety Committee
    • 9:00 am: Economic Development Committee
    • 9:30 am: Streets/Sidewalks/Playground Committee
    • 10:00 am: Water/Sewer Committee

Northumberland County

  • Information about the November 6 general election has been posted by the Office of the Electoral Board and General Registrar on the NoCo website (PDF).
  • Northumberland Public Library's Amnesty Food Drive starts Monday, October 29 at 9:00 am and ends Saturday, December 1 at 5:00 pm. Donate one canned or nonperishable food item for every overdue library item and the librar will forgive the late fee. All donations will be given to the Gleamers and Blenders Food Pantry in Burgess. Fees on lost, damaged, or replacement items still apply.
  • The Northern Neck Regional Jail has several employment opportunities.
  • The Northumberland Public Library Board of Trustees meets Wednesday, November 14 from 5:00–6:00 pm at Northumberland Public Library (7204 Northumberland Hwy, Heathsville; Meeting Room).

Richmond County


Westmoreland County

  • The Colonial Beach Town Center will NOT be open for voting Tuesday, November 6. Instead, people will vote at Colonial Beach High School (100 First St, Colonial Beach). More information.
  • Westmoreland County 2019 dog tags are due December 31. Dog tags may be purchased in person in the Treasurer's Office or by mail. More information.
  • Westmoreland County government offices will be closed in observance of Veteran Day Monday, November 12.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
