Lancaster County


  • The Lancaster County Historic Resources Commission meets Monday, October 1 at 10:00 am at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster). Read the agenda (PDF).
  • The Lancaster County Board of Supervisors will meet Thursday, September 27, 7:00 pm at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster). The agenda includes a public input session, presentations, public hearings, review of the consensus and consideration dockets, and reports.
  • The regular monthly meeting of the Irvington Town Council scheduled for September 13 has being combined with the Thursday, October 11 regular monthly meeting. The October meeting takes place at 6:30 pm at the town office (235 Steamboat Rd, Irvington). All agenda items will be carried over to the October meeting.

Northumberland County

  • If you missed the Northumberland County Board of Supervisors meeting September 20, read the 9/20 meeting agenda.
  • ICYMI, the Northumberland County Board of Supervisors has started using BoardDocs for the supes' meetings. This online tool is new in FY 2019.

Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Wetlands Board meets Thursday, September 27 at 7:30 pm at County Office Building (Warsaw). The agenda:
    • Sterling and Sonja Hening, 3307 Pond Chase Court, Midlothian, VA 23113, has applied for permission to construct an armor stone spur and breakwater with associated beach nourishment and wetlands vegetation plantings along their Rappahannock River shoreline, located at 4535 Naylors Beach Road and further identified as Parcel 6 of Tax Map 14.     • John R. Mothershead, 102 Carriage Point Lane, Glen Allen, VA 23059, has applied for permission to construct an armor stone revetment and multiple armor stone groins with along his Rappahannock River shoreline, located at 484 Motley Farm Lane, Farnham, VA and further identified as Parcel 1 of Tax Map 43(6).     • Cobham Park Farm LLC, c/o Andrew Packett, 478 Cobham Park Lane, Warsaw, VA 22572, has applied for permission to construct a riprap revetment and riprap spurs adjacent to an existing groin along their Rappahannock River shoreline, located at 566 Cobham Park Lane and further identified as Parcel 2 of Tax Map 29.   • Richmond County government will be closed Monday, October 8 for Columbus Day.
  • The Town of Warsaw Planning Commission meets Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 pm at the Town Office (78 Belle Ville Ln, Warsaw; Council Chambers). The public is encouraged to attend.
  • The Town of Warsaw Town Council meets Thursday, October 11 at 7:00 pm at the Town Office (78 Belle Ville Ln, Warsaw; Council Chambers). The public is encouraged to attend.

Westmoreland County

  • Westmoreland County government will be closed Monday, October 8 for Columbus Day.
  • The Westmoreland County Board of Zoning and Appeals meets Monday, September 24 at 9:00 am at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross). Meetings are open to the public the public is encouraged to attend.
  • The Westmoreland County Planning Commission will hold a work session Monday, September 24 at 3:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross). Meetings are open to the public the public is encouraged to attend.
  • The Westmoreland County Planning Commission meets Monday, October 1 at 1:30 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross). Meetings are open to the public the public is encouraged to attend.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
