#NNK meetings, policy news (September 17, 2018)

Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Waste collection is now being held Saturday, October 27, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Kilmarnock Refuse Site (320 White Pine Dr, off Irvington Rd, Kilmarnock). For more information, contact the Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District at (804) 313-9102 ext. 105 or the Lancaster Extension Office at (804) 462-5780.
  • The Friends of Lancaster Public Library's Attic Book Store needs volunteers to work 2- or 4-hour shifts once a month, or more frequently. More information (PDF).
  • The Lancaster County School Board meets Tuesday, October 9 at 5:30 pm in the LCPS Annex Building.
  • The Town of Irvington Planning Commission meets Tuesday, October 2, 6:30–7:30 pm for a regular meeting. The meeting will occur at the Irvington Town Office (235 Steamboat Rd, Irvington).
  • The Town of Kilmarnock shared three Code Red links as part of their Hurricane Florence prep. Signing up for Code Red, if you've not already, is a smart thing to do to receive weather and critical announcements.
  • Volunteer at Belle Isle State Park Saturday, September 22 as part of the Public Lands Day celebration (it's the 25th anniversary of the day). The task of the day is tending to the oyster garden.

Northumberland County

  • Northumberland Public Library shared important info about book return locations and locations of little libraries in the summer 2018 newsletter. Return sites are Callao Supermarket; Lilian Hardware, Burgess; and Wicomico Church Post Office. Little library locations are Post Offices in Wicomico Church and Reedville, YMCA Heathsville, Callao Supermarket, and the Social Services office in Heathsville.
  • The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors postponed their regular monthly meeting to Thursday, September 20 at 5:00 pm in reaction to the expected bad weather.
  • The Northumberland County School Board announced the appointment of a data specialist in a September 11 press release.

Richmond County

  • The Department of Social Services board meeting takes place Tuesday, September 18 at 5:00 pm.
  • Reminder: Richmond County Shred Day is Saturday, September 22, 9:00 am - Noon at the parking lot near the County Administration Office. Individuals/families may have a maximum of two boxes (10”x13”x18”) or three paper grocery bags shredded. More information is available by calling (804) 333-3415.
  • The Richmond County Community Policy Management Team meeting will take place Monday, September 24 at 1:00 pm.

Westmoreland County


Cross-county

  • The NNSWCD board meets Wednesday, October 10 at 6:30 pm at the Northern Neck Planning District Commission (Northern Neck Enterprise Center, 483 Main St, Warsaw; Meeting Room). All NNSWCD Board Meetings are open to the public.

  • The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council meeting takes place October 1-4 in New Jersey. Meeting materials posted as they become available. According to the meeting notice about public comments,
    Written comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19 to be included in the Council meeting briefing book. Comments received after this deadline but before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 27 will be posted as "supplemental materials" on the Council meeting web page. Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
