#NNK meetings, policy news (August 13, 2018)

Lancaster County

  • Lancaster Middle School's open house is being held Tuesday, August 28 from 5:00-7:00 pm. The whole family is welcome. And bring your school supplies to the Open House to avoid having to carry them to school on the first day.

  • The Lancaster County School Board is having a regular meeting Tuesday, August 14. Read the agenda.
  • Dr. Steven Parker, LCPS superintendent, presented SY 2017-18 discipline data (PPT) at the July 2018 school board meeting. Highlights:
    • The number of students receiving exclusionary discipline remained fairly constant, 457 in 2017-18 compared to 470 in 2016-17. The number of days of exclusionary discipline declined significantly, from 2,595.5 to 2,136.
    • OSS days dropped significantly, from 1562.5 in 2016-17 to 994 in 2017-18.
    • ISS days increased this year, from 1033 to 1142. More students are being placed in a setting that will allow them to complete work with assistance.
    • Days of exclusionary discipline dropped dramatically, from 389 days to 143 days. (Of significance, last year one student accounted for 58 days of suspension) (Lancaster Primary School)
    • The number of students receiving exclusionary discipline significantly decreased from 2016-17, from 169 to 129. (Lancaster High School)
    • Likewise, the number of days lost to exclusionary discipline dropped from 844.5 to 541. (Lancaster High School)
  • Reminder: The Lancaster County HHW and E-Waste Collection takes place Saturday, September 15 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Kilmarnock Refuse Center.

Northumberland County

  • Job opening: Part-time Executive Director of the Northumberland County Economic Development Commission. The position is open until filled.
  • The Northumberland County School Board meets Monday, August 13 from 6:00-9:00 pm at Northumberland High School.
  • Northumberland County Public Schools has a number of job openings.

  • School meals will cost more during SY 2018-2019 thanks to a decision by the Northumberland County School Board in June 2018. Paid breakfasts increase from $1.40 to $1.50, paid lunches at Northumberland Elementary School increase from $2.50 to $2.60, and paid lunches at the middle and high schools increase from $2.60 to $2.70.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
