Lancaster County

  • Lancaster County is looking to hire a Building Official. Applications are due Friday, August 3.
  • Lancaster County Department of Emergency Services is implementing a new program in September. It will work with older residents who have been transported by ambulance by county rescue to ensure they are prepared for emergencies. "The department's staff will cover such topics as home safety, driving safety, and disaster preparedness. In addition, county emergency services staff members will check smoke detectors and give information on the programs available throughout the county." Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors seeks bids (PDF) to install a pre-engineered metal frame building. Bids are due August 20.

Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Board of Supervisors is considering changing the hours of convenience centers (waste management) between November 4, 2018 and March 10, 2019 (during DST) and wants input from the public. The supervisors will decide on the change Thursday, September 13. More information is in the change notice (PDF).
  • The Richmond County Community Policy Management Team meets Monday, August 27 at 1:00 pm for their standing meeting. The meeting takes place at the Richmond County Department of Social Services (5579 Richmond Rd, Warsaw) The public is encouraged to attend.
  • The Richmond County elementary and middle schools 2018-2019 school supplies lists are online (PDF).
  • The Warsaw Town Council meets Thursday, August 9 at 7:00 pm at Town Hall (78 Belle Ville Ln, Warsaw).
  • The Warsaw Town Planning Commission meets Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 pm at Town Hall (78 Belle Ville Ln, Warsaw).

Westmoreland County

  • The Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors meets Monday, August 13 at 6:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross).
  • The Westmoreland County Wetlands Board meets Monday, August 20 at 1:30 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross).

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
