Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County Board of Supervisors is holding a work session on the FY 2019 budget Wednesday, April 11 at 5:30 pm at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster, in the Board Meeting Room).
  • Volunteers are needed for the Wednesday, April 11 Belle Isle State Park Garden Clean Up.
  • The Town of Irvington Planning Commission is holding a workshop to "review and discuss the planned residential district draft ordinance. The public may attend but may not participate in discussions." The workshop takes place Monday, April 9 at 5:30 pm at the Town Office (235 Steamboat Rd, Irvington).
  • The Town of Irvington Planning Commission has published the Proposed R-3 Zoning Classification (PDF). The purpose is to allow the town to "maintain the village feel" by restricting types of commercial and residential development and supporting others. There is no indication in the notice about when action will be taken on the proposal.
  • The Town of Kilmarnock Planning Commission meeting for April has been cancelled.
  • Town of Kilmarnock Mayor Mae Umphlett and the Town Council will dedicate the children's playground on Waverly Avenue as Joe Curry Memorial Park in honor of Mr. Curry and his contributions to the community. Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 am.
  • VDOT Hot Spots in the Fredericksburg District — April 8, 2018 – April 14, 2018 (PDF):

    , 8 a.m. ˗˗ 4 p.m. Expect a single lane on eastbound Route 3 at the Norris Bridge on the Lancaster side for guardrail repair. Flaggers will direct drivers through in the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors meets Thursday, April 12 at 5:00 pm at the Northumberland County Courts Building (220 Judicial Pl, Heathsville). The meeting agenda (PDF) includes reports from VDOT, schools, the library, and Bay Aging, a review of the financials, and a public comment period. The board packet will be posted on the supes' web page closer to the meeting.

Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Board of Supervisors April 12 meeting packet is online (PDF). The agenda includes the normal financial and old business reviews in addition to consideration of a public shredding event suggested by Richmond County residents.
  • VDOT Hot Spots in the Fredericksburg District — April 8, 2018 – April 14, 2018 (PDF):
    Route 3 at Route 608 (Farnham Creek Road)
    Monday˗˗ Friday
    , 7 a.m. –6 p.m. Temporary traffic signals have been activated in the work zone of an ongoing emergency pipe improvement project on Route 3 over Laton’s Swamp. Route 3 has been reduced to a single lane just west of the intersection with Route 608 (Farnham
    Creek Road). The temporary traffic signals control one-way, alternating traffic in the work zone until the project is complete. Project completion is May 29, 2018.

    Surface Treatment
    (New) Thursday˗˗ Friday
    , 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route
    618/Fallin Town Road and Route 644/Selfs Lane for surface treatment. Flaggers will direct

  • Food Safety Webinars, April 9 and 10:
    This two-part series, co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Local Food Distribution Work Group and the Chesapeake Farm to Institution Work Group (a partnership of Health Care Without Harm and the Chesapeake Foodshed Network), will feature expert panelists, respondents (including farmers), and time for discussion. We will explore the basics of food safety laws impacting fruit and vegetable farmers, food hubs, and distributors – what are the new rules, when will they go into effect, what (broad) changes do they require for farms and facilities to come into compliance.

    We will then explore more in-depth what the wholesale marketplace requires with respect to these rules and how local government, extension services, food hubs, and nonprofits have been working with farmers to help them obtain required certification.
  • The Northern Neck Soil and Water Conservation District committees and local work group will be meeting before the May board meeting. All meetings will be held at the NNSWCD office (5559 Richmond Rd, Suite B, Warsaw) and are open to the public. Here's a list of the meetings:

  • Preventive Maintenance Work On Norris Bridge May Cause Brief Delays On Norris Bridge On Monday, April 9 — Crews will be working from the bridge deck on the Middlesex County side of the bridge:
    FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Beginning at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 9, motorists can expect brief delays on the Middlesex County side of the Robert O. Norris Bridge while Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews perform minor preventative maintenance on a girder span of the bridge.

    Route 3 will be reduced to a single travel lane in the work zone. One-way, alternating traffic will be controlled by automated flagging stations.

    Work is expected to be complete by 10 a.m.

    The Norris Bridge is located on Route 3 over the Rappahannock River between Lancaster and Middlesex counties.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
