Lancaster County


Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors is holding a public hearing on the Callao Revitalization CDBG Project Wednesday, March 8 at 7:00 pm at the Northumberland County Courts Building (220 Judicial Pl, Heathsville). The purpose is to gather feedback
    on the proposed Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) proposal to be submitted to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development for the Callao Business District Revitalization Project. The Callao Business District Revitalization Project proposal will include the following activities: façade improvements, wayfaring signage, a revolving-loan fund, streetscape improvements, a marketing plan, website for the Project Area, and the formation of a downtown organization.

  • The Northumberland County Wetlands Board's next meeting is Tuesday, March 13 at 7:00 pm at the Old Courthouse (72 Monument Place, Heathsville, in the Board of Supervisors room). There are five items on the agenda (PDF). The meeting is open to the public.
  • The Northumberland County Board of Zoning Appeals is holding a public hearing Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 pm at the Old Courthouse (72 Monument Place, Heathsville, in the Board of Supervisors room).
  • The Northumberland Public Library's Tech Mobile continues its regular schedule:
    • Mondays: 10:00 am-Noon at Festival Halle (177 Main St, Reedville) and 3:00-5:00 pm at Wicomico United Methodist Church (5060 Jessie Dupont Memorial Hwy, Wicomico Church)
    • Wednesdays: 2:00-4:00 pm at Sona Bank (110 Northumberland Hwy, Callao) and 5:00-7:00 pm at Zion Church (2309 Northumberland Hwy, Lottsburg, in the parking lot)

  • Northumberland County Public Schools is holding the next SEAC meeting Thursday, March 22 from 7:00-9:00 pm at the School Board Office (2172 Northumberland Hwy, Lottsburg).

Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Board of Supervisors meet Thursday, March 8 at 9:00 am at the county building. Read the March board packet (PDF).
  • The Richmond County Community Policy Management Team regular meeting will take place Monday, March 26 at 1:00 pm at the Richmond County Department of Social Services (5579 Richmond Rd, Warsaw). The public is invited to attend.
  • Richmond County is in the midst of FY 2019 budget development per the budget development sked, right. Additional information about the budget and budget actions are in the Richmond County Board of Supervisors March meeting packet (PDF).
  • Richmond County Public Schools has several job openings.

Westmoreland County

  • The Westmoreland County School Board meets Monday, March 19 at 5:00 pm for a regular meeting. The board is holding a budget hearing the same day at 7:00 pm and the public is encouraged to participate.

Cross-county

  • Bay Aging announced that CMS will be mailing new Medicare cards between April 2018 and April 2019. The new cards will sport new account numbers and more importantly, be without SSNs. Learn more: New Medicare cards.

  • The Lancaster County Sheriff's office reminded us of the change in the state's FOIA law.
  • Middle Peninsula Northern Neck CSB is sponsoring Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Friday, March 23, all day. The event will be held at Bay Aging in Warsaw. The event
    is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing mental health or addiction challenges or is in crisis.

    The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

    This training is open to the public. Materials will be provided. Lunch is on your own. Registrations will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
