Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County Board of Supervisors is holding a work session on the proposed FY 2019 Lancaster County Operating Budget Thursday, March 29 at 5:30 pm at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Virginia Primary Highway Route 3, Lancaster Court House). "Department heads and organizations requesting funding are not required to attend this budget work session. Future budget work sessions will be scheduled."
  • The Lancaster County Board of Supervisors next regular monthly meeting takes place Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 pm at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Virginia Primary Highway Route 3, Lancaster Court House, in the Board Meeting Room). The agenda includes a public input session, presentations, a review of the financials, and a closed meeting.
  • The Lancaster County Wetlands Board meets Thursday, April 12 at 9:30 am at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Virginia Primary Highway Route 3, Lancaster Court House, in the Board of Supervisors Meeting Room). The agenda has two items:
    1. David E. & Elizabeth A. Evans c/o Bayshore design, LLC., P.O. Box 339, Kinsale, VA 22488; requests permission to construct three 18’ and one 12’ timber spur extensions with associated beach nourishment, refurbish 40’ of existing riprap sill and construct a 70’ riprap revetment along the shoreline of Rappahannock River. Located off VSH 681 (Monaskon Road) on Granville Bay. Tax Map # 19-45B. VMRC# 18-0230.
    2. John E. & Carolyn B. Franklin c/o Roger McKinley, 691 Mill Point Drive, Heathsville, VA 22473; requests permission to construct a 57’ linear foot riprap revetment and construct a 125’ linear foot vinyl wave attenuator below MLW along the shoreline of Carter Cove.   • The Lancaster County School Board's next Chairman's Night will be held Tuesday, April 17 at 5:30 pm in the LCPS Annex. All are welcome to share their thoughts with the chair.
  • The Irvington Planning Commission is holding a regular meeting Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 pm at Irvington Baptist Church (53 King Carter Dr, Irvington).
  • Lancaster Primary School Kindergarten registration's new date is Wednesday, March 28 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the primary school. Caregivers and children are encouraged to attend to register, meet the teachers, and receive a backpack with treats (kids only). Learn more about registration requirements (PDF).   • The Town of Kilmarnock seeks quotes for spring landscaping services; the deadline is April 5 at 5:00 pm. REQUEST FOR QUOTE Spring 2018 installation (PDF).

  • Colonial Beach Public Schools has issued a Request for Proposals for HVAC Maintenance Services (PDF). The deadline is April 10 at 3:00 pm.
  • The Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors meets Monday, April 9 at 6:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross).
  • Westmoreland County is looking for a Director of Finance. Apply by April 16.

Cross-county

  • The community is invited to Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital's 3-D Mammography Open House Tuesday, March 27 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital (101 Harris Rd, Kilmarnock). The event includes blessing of the space, a tour of the RGH Women's Imaging suite and a look-see at the recently installed 3-D mammography unit, refreshments, and question and answer sessions with RGH imaging staff. Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
