#NNK meetings, policy news (December 11, 2017)

Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County Board of Supervisors is meeting Monday, December 11 at 7:00 pm at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster, in the Board Meeting Room). The December 11 agenda includes the regular public input session; presentations by the Lancaster Community Library and
    Robinson, Farmer, Cox Associates regarding the FY 2017 audit; public hearing on amendments to the Zoning Ordinance; consideration of awarding a contract for the Sheriff's Office CAD, FY 2018 school budget appropriation capital request; and the report from the county administrator.
  • Lancaster County Public Schools has several job openings.

Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors' next regular meeting will be held Thursday, December 14 at 5:00 pm. The December 14 agenda (PDF) includes: (1) reports from VDOT, Northumberland County Public Schools, and Robinson, Farmer, Cox, Associates about the audit; (2) a closed meeting with legal counsel about potential litigation; and (3) a number of public hearings (see above).
  • Northumberland County Public Schools is seeking public input via a survey on the proposed SY 2018-2019 budget. School personnel will take all recommendations into consideration. All input is anonymous.
  • Northumberland County Public Schools is holding a public hearing on the SY 2018-2019 budget Monday, December 11 at 6:00 pm at Northumberland High School (201 Academic Ln, Heathsville, in the auditorium).

Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Public Library Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday, December 12 from 4:00-5:00 pm at the library (Rappahannock Community College, 52 Campus Dr, Warsaw). The meeting is open to the public.
  • The Richmond County School Board's Wednesday, December 13, 10:00 am meeting location has changed. The new location is Richmond County School Board Office (92 Walnut St, Warsaw).

Westmoreland County

  • Westmoreland Board of Supervisors scheduled to vote on fracking regulations:
    The Westmoreland Board of Supervisors will finally make a decision concerning new regulations designed to restrict oil and gas exploration in Westmoreland County. If passed these new regulations will severely restrict the profitability of fracking in the county.

    Many residents have been following the development of these regulations for over a year and have continued to request a total and outright ban on the practice of fracking.

    Planning Commission Officials have stated that if fracking is banned, oil companies can fight that decision in court.

    The Commission feels there needs to be several code restrictions in place as a line of defense against such possibility.

    The restrictions will limit drilling in close proximity to wells and will require gas and oil drillers to perform a multitude of paper work and be subjected to numerous safety inspections.

    Copies of the exact regulations can be viewed in the Westmoreland County Planning and Zoning office, located in the George D. English Building in Montross.

    The Supervisors meeting will take place in the English building on Monday Dec. 11 at 6 pm.

    All residents are invited to attend. Several public hearings have already been held on this matter so there will not be an opportunity to speak on this issue before a vote is taken. However all meetings do allow a public comments section at the conclusion of each meeting.     (Colonialbeachfreepress.com)

Cross-county

  • Why net neutrality matters to the Northern Neck:
    Chairman Pai and allies are relying heavily on the idea that the market will appropriately and adequately handle any throttling or blocking decisions made by ISPs. While history demonstrates that this is not likely, let's say that in 2018 the market will work for consumers. What happens in places such as the Northern Neck where broadband is not widely available and few ISPs operate? It hardly seems likely that the market here will work for consumers.
  • The Northern Neck Soil and Water Conservation District meeting takes place Wednesday, December 13. Read the NNSWCD Board meeting agenda.
  • Northern Neck Audubon Project to Help Increase American Kestrel Population (NNKgreen.org)
  • The next Northern Neck Beekeepers meeting is Monday, December 11 at 7:00 pm at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (6807 Northumberland Hwy, Heathsville).
  • Rappahannock Community College is hosting information sessions in December and January to answer questions of those considering getting a degree. Sessions include campus tours and faculty will be in attendance to answer questions about specific programs. Interested in attending? Register for an info session. The Emergency Medical Responder-EMS 101 class information session takes place at the Northumberland Sheriff's Department Monday, December 18 at 6:00 pm. The Advanced EMT info session takes place at King George Fire Department on Thursday, December 14 at 7:00 pm.
