Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County School Board is meeting Tuesday, November 14 from 6:30-7:30 pm in the School Board meeting annex.
  • The Irvington Town Council is meeting Thursday, November 9 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Town Office (235 Steamboat Rd, Irvington).
  • The Irvington Planning Commission is holding a workshop to review the town's proposed Planned Unit Development ordinance Tuesday, November 28 at 4:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the Town Office (235 Steamboat Rd, Irvington). The public may attend but may not participate in discussions.
  • The Irvington Village Improvement Association will meet Tuesday, November 14 at 5:00 pm at the Tides Inn (480 King Carter Dr, Irvington). More information is available by calling (804) 577-7501 or (804) 438-6230 (Town Office) or emailing dermotmcnulty@verizon.net.

Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland County School Board is meeting Monday, November 13 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Northumberland High School auditorium.
  • The Northumberland County Board of Supervisors is meeting Thursday, November 9 at 5:00 pm at the Northumberland Courts Building. The November 9 agenda (PDF) includes reports from the schools superintendent, VDOT, and county administrator; a report from the county administrator; and a pubic comment period.
  • The Northumberland Public Library's Board of Trustees is meeting Wednesday, November 8 from 5:00-6:00 pm at the library (7204 Northumberland Hwy, Heathsville, in the meeting room).
  • Northumberland Public Library is collecting non-perishable food for the Northern Neck Food Bank through Monday, November 13. Drop off food at the library (7204 Northumberland Hwy, Heathsville).
  • The Northumberland County Planning Commission is holding a public hearing Thursday, November 16 at 7:00 pm in the Northumberland County Courts Building (220 Judicial Pl, Heathsville) about amending the Northumberland County Zoning Ordinance about power stations and equipment. Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Department of Emergency Services is holding an information session about the new auxiliary program Wednesday, November 15 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Richmond County Department of Emergency Services (6674 Richmond Rd, Warsaw).   • The Richmond County School Board is meeting Wednesday, November 8. The agenda includes a request from Virginia Tech for the use of school buses to transport children to 4-H camp next summer; budget development for SY 2018-19; the Title IV, Part A- Student Support and Academic Enrichment Application (ESSA) application; vote on substitute teacher qualifications; and other items.
  • The Richmond County Public Library Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday, November 14 from 4:00-5:00 pm at the library (Rappahannock Community College, 52 Campus Dr, Warsaw). The meeting is open to the public.

Westmoreland County

  • A Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office deputy was recently certified as a D.A.R.E. Instructor. Read more in the Facebook post.
  • The Westmoreland County Planning Commission will review the Cook-Lovell proposal to build a beer brewing facility and restaurant and tasting room at their regular meeting Monday, November 6 at 1:30 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross). The case will also be heard Monday, November 13 at the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors meeting.
  • The Westmoreland County School Board is meeting Monday, November 20 at 6:00 pm.
  • The Westmoreland County School Board is holding a work session Tuesday, November 7 at 4:00 pm at the Gerald B. Roane Center for Excellence. Read the work session agenda.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
