Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County Wetlands Board is holding a public hearing Thursday, October 19 at 9:30 am at the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Road, Lancaster, Board of Supervisors Meeting Room). Under consideration are the following matters:
    1. Paul and Terrie Alderks and Paul Cosing c/o Roger McKinley, Sr., 691 Mill Point Drive, Heathsville, VA 22473; requests permission to construct a 97’ linear foot riprap revetment along the shoreline of Dymer Creek. Located off VSH 650 (Fleets Bay Road) on Coppedge Farm. Tax Map # 29-65. VMRC# 17-1367.
    2. Robert L. Dominick, Jr. c/o Joseph Scott, P.O. Box 315, Kilmarnock, VA 22482; requests permission to construct a 26’ linear foot riprap revetment channelward of an existing timber bulkhead along the shoreline of the Eastern Branch of the Corrotoman River. Located off VSH 675 (Black Stump Road) on Waddy Drive. Tax Map # 22-44I. VMRC# 17-1570.
    3. George C. Palmer, III c/o Glenn Lester Co. Inc., P.O. Box 42, Wicomico Church, VA 22579; requests permission to construct a 165’ linear foot riprap revetment along the shoreline of Indian Creek. Located off VSH 650 (Fleets Bay Road) on Bluewater Farm. Tax Map # 29-57D. VMRC# 17-1583.
    4. David Walsh, 4485 Windmill Point Road, White Stone, VA 22578; requests permission to construct 225’ and 115’ linear feet of vinyl bulkhead, construct two 70’ linear foot sheet vinyl jetties, one 45’ linear foot sheet vinyl groin, re-work and topdress 50’ linear feet of existing riprap revetment, construct a 25’ linear foot spur, construct riprap breakwaters 70’ linear feet, 30’, 70, 30’, and 120’ each, remove 150’ linear feet of riprap revetment and create 390’ linear feet of living shoreline with associated nourishment and vegetation along the shoreline of Little Bay. Located off VSH 695 (Windmill Point Road) at Foxwells. Tax Map# 36-16. VMRC# 17-1205.
  • The Lancaster County School Board's Tuesday, October 17, 6:30 pm special meeting is being held to discuss a personnel matter. As such, this will largely be a closed meeting.
  • There will be various activities performed on the Norris Bridge from October 16 to 20. There will be daytime delays. Learn more in the release NORRIS BRIDGE INSPECTION CONTINUES OCT. 16-20.

Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland Public Library's Tech Mobile will make its debut at the Heathsville Farmer's Market Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Richmond County

  • Richmond County Waterway Clean-up Day deets: Sunday, October 22, 1:00-3:00 pm at Carter's Wharf Landing on the Rappahannock River.
  • The next Richmond County Planning Commission meeting takes place Monday, November 6 at 7:00 pm at the County Administrative Building (101 Court Circle, Warsaw, Public Meeting Room).

Westmoreland County

  • Westmoreland County is looking to fill three positions: Information Systems Support Technician, EMT Paramedic, and EMT Intermediate. Learn more and apply.
  • The Colonial Beach Town Council meeting will be held Wednesday, October 18 at 6:00 pm at the Town Center (22 Washington Ave, Colonial Beach).
  • Colonial Beach Elementary School has been fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. This is the third consecutive year CBES has achieved full accreditation. (ES Parent Newsletter October 2017 (PDF))
  • The Montross Town Council will meet Tuesday, October 24 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm at Town Hall (15869 Kings Highway, Montross).
  • The Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for a part time Animal Shelter Attendant. Applications are due October 25. Learn more.

Cross-county

  • The Coalition for Healthy Virginia Communities is holding an Opioid Misuse Awareness Summit in Lancaster County Tuesday, December 5 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm at White Stone Church of the Nazarene (57 Whisk Dr, Kilmarnock). The keynote is by Fred Wells Brason II, President/CEO, Project Lazarus Online.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
