Lancaster County

Free breakfast in Lancaster Friday, September 29! on Biteable.

  • Friday, September 29 is Feed VA Day of Action at Lancaster County Public Schools. This means breakfast is free for all students. Community members are being asked to help make the Day of Action possible by purchasing one or more breakfasts. Each breakfast costs $3.25. This breakfast is part of First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe's Virginia Food Access Network's Day of Action. Organizations are taking action September 29 to "bridge the nutritional divide in Virginia."
  • The Irvington Planning Commission will meet Tuesday, October 3 from 6:30-7:30 pm at Town Hall (235 Steamboat Road, Irvington).
  • Lancaster Public Library is holding two Equifax Data Breach sessions, Wednesday, September 27 and Thursday, September 28 at 11:30 am. "Learn if you were impacted, how to protect yourself, and enroll in credit protection and/or credit freeze." Both events are open to the public.
  • The Lancaster County Board of Supervisors will meet Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 pm. Read the agenda.

    LANCASTER—A local organization, Friends of Lancaster County (FOLCVA), believes several issues of major significance to county citizens are at stake in the November 7 election, including the future of the county’s children and whether 21st century jobs are in the future for the Northern Neck.

    To help keep the public informed, FOLCVA and the Lancaster Community Library are sponsoring a candidates’ forum at 7 p.m. October 12 at the library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.

  • Celebrate National Day of Service and National Public Lands at Belle Isle State Park (1632 Belle Isle Rd, Lancaster) Saturday, September 30 from 10:00 am - Noon.
    Help Belle Isle State Park tend the garden, the oyster garden that is. Learn all about the life of an oyster: what they eat, how they grow, and if they have friends and enemies. We will also discuss the importance to the ecosystem of the bay and river. Volunteers will get a hands on, up close look at the oysters, as well as the critters that call the garden home. Be ready to get your hands dirty afterwards, as we clean the floats. Dress for the weather, in clothes you won't mind getting muddy. If you have them, bring your favorite pair of waterproof gloves and a bottle of water. There is free parking/admission for this day. Northumberland County

  • The Northumberland Special Education Advisory Committee meeting will be held Thursday, November 29 from 7:00-9:00 pm at the NCPS School Board Office (2172 Northumberland Highway, Lottsburg).
  • Northumberland Public Library and Northumberland County Public Schools recently celebrated summer reading with fun (and messy) activities. Accomplishments include reading 15,172 (14,969, students only), far surpassing the goal of 12,000 and the 2016 total of 11,300; an average of 51 books read per student; and a 12% increase in participation over the previous year. Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Library Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday, October 10 from 4:00-5:00 pm at the library (Rappahannock Community College, 52 Campus Dr, Warsaw). The meeting is open to the public.

Westmoreland County

  • The Westmoreland County Planning Commission will hold a work session Monday, September 25 at 3:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross).
  • The Westmoreland County Planning Commission will hold a regular meeting Monday, October 2 at 1:30 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross).
  • Celebrate National Public Lands at Westmoreland State Park (145 Cliff Road Montross) Saturday, September 30 from 10:00 am - Noon.
    National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity to help a local or favorite public land near you. Join us at the Discovery Center where we will begin trail clean-up along our CC trail. Bring your gloves and we will provide the trash bags. 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. - Join us at the Boathouse to help clean the beach along the Potomac River after a busy summer.   • The Central Rappahannock Regional Library branches are closed Friday, September 29 for staff development. In Westmoreland County, this means that the Cooper and Montross branches will be closed.

  • Ed and Cathy Gillespie will stop in Kilmarnock Tuesday, September 26 from 5:30-7:30 pm as part of the candidate's "InformED Decisions" tour. Tickets will be available by lottery. (River Country News)
