Lancaster County

  • The Irvington Town Council will meet Thursday, July 13 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Town Office (at 235 Steamboat Road, Irvington).
  • Irvington's planning commission will hold a workshop to review the town's proposed Planned Unit Development (PUD) ordinance Tuesday, July 18 at 3:00 pm at the Town Office (at 235 Steamboat Road, Irvington). The public may attend but may not participate in any discussions.
  • The Lancaster County Wetlands Board will meet Thursday, July 20 at 9:30 am in the Lancaster County Administration Building (8311 Mary Ball Rd, Lancaster). The agenda is a busy one:

Hwy, Glenns, VA 23149; requests permission to reconstruct a 180' linear foot riprap revetment along the shoreline of Georges Cove off of Dymer Creek. Box 315, Kilmarnock, VA 22482; requests permission to construct a 60' linear foot riprap revetment and 50' liner foot riprap marsh toe along the shoreline of the Western Branch of the Corrotoman River.     5. John Pettigrew c/o Bayshore Design, LLC., P.O. Box 339, Kinsale, VA 22488; requests permission to refurbish 343' linear feet of existing riprap revetment and provide 75 cubic yards of beach nourishment and associated wetlands plantings along the shoreline of the Rappahannock River.     6. Richard Shurtz c/o Roger McKinley, Sr., 691 Mill Point Drive, Heathsville, VA 22473; requests permission to construct a 133' linear foot riprap sill with associated wetland nourishment along the shoreline of Indian Creek.     7. Herbert E. & E. Page Sening c/o Bayshore Design, LLC., P.O. Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Public Schools website is new and improved!
  • The Richmond County School Board will meet Wednesday, July 12 at 10:00 am.
  • The Warsaw Town Council will meet Thursday, July 13 at 7:00 pm. The meeting takes place in the Council Chambers (78 Belle Ville Lane, Warsaw). All meetings are open to public and are handicap accessible.

  • The Richmond County Planning Commission meets Monday, July 10 at 7:00 pm at County Administrative Building (101 Court Circle, Warsaw, in the Public Meeting Room).
  • The Richmond County Board of Supervisors meets Thursday, July 13 at 9:00 am at County Administrative Building (101 Court Circle, Warsaw, in the Public Meeting Room). The July 13 agenda (PDF) contains documents related to the various items, such as the FY 2018 budget appropriation resolution and the Commerce Park/Community Park - Farm Lease. There are no public hearings scheduled for the 7:00 pm portion of the meeting.
  • The Richmond County Board of Zoning Appeals meets Tuesday, July 25 at 7:00 pm at County Administrative Building (101 Court Circle, Warsaw, in the Public Meeting Room).
  • The Richmond County Public Library trustees will meet Tuesday, July 11 from 4:00–5:00 pm at Rappahannock Community College (52 Campus Drive). The meeting is open to the public.

Westmoreland County

  • Understanding American Denial: Workshop and Seminar takes place Wednesday, August 16, 9:30 am–4:00 pm at Stratford Hall (483 Great House Road, Stratford). This free workshop and seminar on the film American Denial is not about racism but rather one on understanding the civic infrastructure that prevents all of our citizens from enjoying the benefits inherent in the American Creed. This workshop seeks as an educational experience on the lasting legacy of Gunnar Myrdal's research study An American Dilemma and the associated film American Denial. Registration is required, please contact Jon Bachman via email, jbachman@stratfordhall.org or (804) 493-1972 to register. Lunch will be provided free of charge (vegetarian options are available). For educators, CEUs are available upon request. Who should attend: People interested in a deeper understanding of American democracy, people involved with community work, educators, people engaged in politics, museum educators, people engaged or interested in American Studies, and people interested in conflict resolution.

  • The Colonial Beach Town Council will meet Wednesday, July 19 at 6:00 pm at the Town Center (22 Washington Ave, Colonial Beach).

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
