Lancaster County

  • The Lancaster County School Board will hold a special meeting Friday, July 28 at 5:00 pm in the Lancaster County Public Schools Annex. The agenda includes a closed session on real estate matters.
  • Irvington's planning commission will meet Tuesday, August 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Town Hall (235 Steamboat Rd, Irvington).

Richmond County

  • The Richmond County Board of Zoning Appeals will meet Tuesday, July 25 at 7:00 pm in the county building (101 Court Circle, Warsaw, in the Richmond County Public Meeting Room). This will be a continuation of the May 23 meeting.

Westmoreland County

  • The Westmoreland County Planning Commission will meet Monday, August 7 at 1:30 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross). The agenda (PDF) includes:
    CASE # 1708-CBAE-04~ Request by Leanne Martin, 1030 Shore Drive, Colonial Beach, VA 22443 for a Chesapeake Bay Act Exception to allow land disturbing and construction within the 50-foot and 100-foot Resource Protection Areas (RPA). The property is located in the Westmoreland Shores subdivision, as shown on zoning map 6B, section 3, block A and lot 5, Washington Magisterial District.

  • The Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors will hold a regular meeting Monday, August 14 at 6:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk St, Montross).
  • The Colonial Beach Planning Commission will meet Thursday, July 27 at 5:30 pm at the Town Center (22 Washington Ave, Colonial Beach, in the Meeting Hall).

Cross-county

  • The Lancaster County Sheriff and Northumberland County Sheriffs Office recapped the July 17 Drug Task Force Announces Operation "Pick em Up" (PDF). The takeaways:
    The Chesapeake Bay Narcotics Task Force, consisting of the sheriff's offices in Lancaster and Northumberland County along with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Drug Enforcement Division, took to the streets with their third roundup for 2017.

    Officers from these agencies recently charged 18 offenders on a total of 34 charges, all narcotics related. There were a total of 8 misdemeanor and 26 felony charges placed.
  • The Northern Neck Soil and Water Conservation District board will meet Wednesday, September 13 at 6:30 pm at the Northern Neck Enterprise Center (483 Main St, Warsaw, in the Northern Neck Planning District Commission Meeting Room). All NNSWCD Board Meetings are open to the public.

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
