  • The Board of Supervisors will hold an FY 2018 budget work session Monday, June 12 at 6:00 pm in the supes meeting room (old courthouse, Heathsville).

Westmoreland County

  • The Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors will hold a regular meeting Monday, June 12 at 6:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk Street, Montross). The June 12 agenda (PDF) includes the following items: Approval of Appropriation Increase/Decrease Requests; Virginia Department of Transportation Public Hearing; and Old Business, Animal Shelter Contract with Richmond County.
  • The Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors will hold a land use meeting Wednesday, June 14 at 6:00 pm at the George D. English, Sr. Memorial Building (111 Polk Street, Montross) The June 14 agenda (PDF) includes the following items: Public hearing on amending zoning ordinance re: dog kennels and two re: solar generation facilities.
  • Westmoreland County is soliciting bids for Glebe Harbor Shoreline Stabilization & Beach Nourishment Project. The deadline is Thursday, June 22.
  • The May 24 Electoral Board Meeting minutes (PDF) are online. The board discussed security, compliance, and continuity of service.

Cross county

  • The Northern Neck Soil & Water Conservation District is holding several policy-related events in June. NNSWCD will table at the Heathsville Farmers Market Saturday, June 17 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm to promote Chesapeake Bay Awareness (Awareness Week is the second week of June) participate in RivahFest! Saturday, June 17 with the ever-popular Mobile Education Unit. The unit takes people on a walk through "The World Beneath Your Feet." The NNSWCD board will meet Wednesday, June 21 at 6:30 pm at the Planning District Commission Conference Room (in the Enterprise Center on Main Street, Warsaw). And NNSWCD will join others Thursday, June 22 at 6:00 pm for the TMDL Public Meeting for Westmoreland, Richmond, King George, Caroline and Essex counties. (Update:

Quilting in red, white, and blue: Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show, July 1-7

Historic Christ Church & Museum and Sewlovelee are featuring the art of NNK quilters July 1-7 at the Celebrating Our Independence Quilt Show . This joint celebration combines art and history. Quilters are asked to exhibit their red, white, and blue quilts which tell the stories of our independence from Britain, our history since the American Revolution, and the future of the United States. The quilts will also serve as the backdrop of Christ Church's annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading is a patriotic celebration and is in partnership with the Cobbs Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The blue crab population has declined 25% according to latest dredge survey results

The Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) has announced the 25% decline of the blue crab population between 2024 and 2025. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) calls the results a “distressing low.” Many in the Bay watershed would likely agree with CBF’s reaction. Not two months ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation released the results of the IPSOS poll of 2,000 people living across the Chesapeake Bay watershed―DC, MD, PA, and VA―which found that the Bay animal most in need of protection was the blue crab (70%). Other top animals identified were bald eagle (68%), oyster (49%), and striped bass (36%).
